Tyson Foods Recall Their Chicken Nugget Products

On Tuesday, September 27th, Tyson Foods is recalling over 130,000 pounds of their fully-cooked chicken nugget products. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the food is believed to be contaminated with pieces of hard plastic. It is considered a Class I recall because these products are “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

The contamination was discovered when customers complained to the food company about a foreign substance found in the chicken. The plastic is described to be 21 mm in length and 6.5 mm in diameter.

The source of the plastic pieces is said to be part of a rod that is used to connect a plastic transfer belt. Tyson Foods does not possess machines which can detect plastic contamination, resulting in the affected products passing through safety checkpoints, such as a metal detector.

Among the recalled items are five-pound bags containing “Tyson Fully Cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets” with a “Best If Used By” date of July 18, 2017, and case code 2006SDL03 and 2006SDL33. In addition, the 20-pound bulk packages of Spare Time Fully Cooked, Panko Chicken Nuggets, Nugget Shaped Chicken Breast Pattie Fritters with Rib Meat with a production date of July 18, 2016 and case code of 2006SDL03 were pulled.

These recalled products have the establishment number “EST. 13556” printed adjacent to the “Best If Used By” date on the back of the package. The contaminated 20-pound bags are located in Pennsylvania; however, the five-pound bags were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

In November, Tyson Foods recalled more than 52,000 pounds of chicken-wing products as a result of an “off odor” scent.
